Hills Like White Elephants
Ernest Hemingway

The hills the valley the Ebro were long and white. this side there was no shade and no trees and the station was two lines of rails the sun. Close the side the station there was the warm shadow the building and a curtain, made strings bamboo beads, hung the open door the bar, to keep out flies. The American and the girl with him sat a table the shade, the building. It was very hot and the express Barcelona would come forty minutes. It stopped this junction two minutes and went Madrid.
‘What should we drink?’ the girl asked. She had taken off her hat and put it the table.
‘It’s pretty hot,’ the man said.
‘Let’s drink beer.’
‘Dos cervezas,’ the man said the curtain.
‘Big ones?’ a woman asked the doorway.
‘Yes. Two big ones.’
The woman brought two glasses beer and two felt pads. She put the felt pads and the beer glass the table and looked the man and the girl. The girl was looking off the line of hills. They were white the sun and the country was brown and dry.
‘They look like white elephants,’ she said.
‘I’ve never seen one,’ the man drank his beer.
